Mr. Jack

Album: Steal This Album! (2002)

Songfacts®:

  • This song is about a drug dealer known as "Mr. Jack," and where his lifestyle has landed him: on the side of the freeway in the car, surrounded by cops, most likely after running from the little men pointing big guns at his head at 7 a.m. This is probably the "cause of your surprise" mentioned in the first verse.
  • This was originally titled "P.I.G." Along with a batch of other songs recorded in the sessions for the band's second album, Toxicity, it was leaked on the Internet, prompting them to release the set as their next album, Steal This Album! (the title a reference to Abbie Hoffman's Steal This Book). >>

  • Name from A Can Of Beansi thought he was talking abt Nicholas II when he said 7am morning little men with big guns lol
  • Beans from Idk You Tell MeI believe it may be about a drug dealer because in the special thanks or whatever Serj thanks Mr. Jack for the mass relaxaciones, which I would interpret as something related to drugs. I am very confused still, as some parts do not make sense. It can't be a drunk driver because of the lines "7 am morning went to take us away" (how is that related to drunk driving?), which would not fit those theories. But then again the police would not come after a drug dealer pointing guns at their head. I don't know what to think about this, but I am going to stick with this for now.
  • AncomMr Jack (Jack) is slang for cop. It's a bad cop that gets his comeuppance.
  • Jonas(thorn) from Los Angeles Funny I was told it was about the hillside strangler
  • Sebastian from Brasil, Rs Santa Cruz Do SulI think it is a police ambush for Mr Jack who in this case would be a pedophile.
  • Cintya from Compton CaI read that this song is about an alcoholic being pulled over for driving under the influence. The mouth wash is used by drunk drivers to disguise their breath. They run the lights. I've known drunk drivers where they them selves just stop on the side of the freeway until they sober up the next morning. The cause of your demise, well we all know that once you get a DUI your life won't be what it was.
  • Cal from SomewhereThe drug dealer theory makes complete sense. If you read the special thanks from Serj Tankian on the Toxicity album, he thanks Mr. Jack for the "mass relaxaciones".
  • Demetrios from Orem UtI think it’s about the Armenian genocide and Mr. Jack in it and how America ignored it and his wife called him to tell him where are you at the men then goto him they follow him and then it says on the phone call they have big guns pointed at our head I think he talked to his son or daughter.
  • Stephanie Johnson from Las Vegas NvIt is interesting that people spend so much time trying to decode the metaphorical meaning of this band's lyrics that they completely miss the obvious which is the title of the song. How anyone or I will never know, as far as the debatable however is this particular song title. Mr. Jack he is obviously a car hence the word Jack referring to a carjacker jacking a car getting car jack it's simple.
  • Gina from Orange, CaThere's a game called Mr. Jack about Jack the Ripper.
  • Mike from IndianaI don't think this song has anything to do with a drug dealer. Mr. Jack is a police officer "On the side of the freeway in the car" waiting to pull someone over. The lines "Is that the cause of your surprise" and "Protectors on your back, Lights are on their track" support that. Then comparisons are made how they are pigs similar (but obviously on a much smaller scale) to those who are "Little men" with "big guns, pointed at our heads". Pretty much "F*** the police" in a poetic tale.
  • Breanna from San Antonio, TxThankyou Eanne,Melbourne, for that info because that helps me a lot to under stand the song better now.But i still wonder if SOAD does drugs.
  • P from Houston, NyI'm impressed by all of the interpretations on this page, and I know I'm way off... yet I'm still surprised that no one else had the same silly idea as me: I always thought it was about some guys who got a flat and had to pull over. They're on the side of the freeway searching for Mr. Jack so they can get back on the road. Heck, maybe they did have drugs and they never would have gotten caught if the cop didn't stop to help them out.
  • Tom from Waddy , KyI thought he was talking about a victim of an I.E.D.
  • Joe from El Paso, TxThere are two problems with your theories. 1) cops aren't going to point rifels at a drug dealer's head, maybe a killer or a kidnapper, but not a drug dealer and 2) nowhere in the song says he's a drug dealer, he could have commited a different crime.
  • Joe from El Paso, TxIf you remove the cover off of a Toxicity album and look at the back of it where the Special Thanks is, Serj thanks a "Mr. Jack" for mass relaxaciones. John also specially thanks Jack Osbourne and the Osbourne family.
  • Ryan from Killer County, Paokay the song is about a drug dealer mr jack...hes on the side of the road road waiting...when the say you ran that light at dawn...running lights is a crime so the police got him..and then its like a conversation "get ur hands up,get out of the car"..."f--k you pig"mr jack..pig is refering to the cops..7 am morning is during school hrs so cops are out.and little men big guns pointing at ur heads ...the guns drawn and ready
  • Travis from Denver, CoBy far one of the best songs by system in my opinion :)
  • Corey from Richmond, VaGreat song! Love the begaining, solo is great. The song is somewhat calm at first then it gets loud.
  • Alana from Columbus, Msdaron's guitar solo in the beginning is awesome!!
  • Al from Revere, MaOne of my favorite songs by System
  • Jake from Boston, Ma: when SOADs talking about Mr Jack on the side of the freeway they're referring to a drug dealer; systems showing the government's overfocus with minor things such as hunting down this drug dealer named Mr Jack -- then they start to talk about "7 am, morning, came to take us away, little men, big guns, pointed at our heads" -- thats when systems talking about the Armenians genocide; it could applied to any time frame though (Darfur today)-- and the innocent are being rounded up and systematically eliminated -- system's showing how the government's focusing so much time and effort on finding the drug dealer in their own country and in places far away they dont give a s--t about the people being killed in the genocide -- at the end they yell "F--k you pig" -- debasing those politicians allowing the genocide to occur and explaining that all the effort being put towards the little things, like finding Mr Jack, the drug dealer who if doing noone harm, can be put towards ending the genocide.
  • Galo from Cuenca, EcuadorWhen I first heard this song I just asumed it was about Jack Kennedy, how some people think he was not as good a president as most think.

Like the part are "where you at, on the side of the free or in the car" reminded me of the zapruder film where you see the president on one side-in the car- and the free on the other-on the side walk-.

The line of "protectors on your back" reminded me of how, after he gets shot, secret service rushes toward the car.

The line "little men, big guns pointed at our head" is what clenched it for me. Obviously, if I'm right, would be a reference to the cuban missile crisis where these two men, kenedy and krushchev, sent us to the brink of nuclear war and there where literally these big guns (nuclear missiles) pointed at ours, everybody's, heads.

And the end: "f--k you pig" is the general sentiment of people towards someone of authority like a president.

The other lines like the mouth wash, 7 am, and lights on the track I don't know how they fit, so I could be wrong about all of it.
  • Andrew from Easton, PaI love this song, and the movie Se7en. But can someone explain to me how this reminds them of Se7en? I tried to find it in the song, but I can't really find anything. The song is creepy sounding though, like the movie.
  • Damien from Edmonton, CanadaI think this song is about the film "Se7en". But this is a very creepy and cool song.
  • Blake from Hamilton, OhI always thought "Jack" was referring to a cop. How he's sitting in a car LOOKING for criminals going by on a freeway. But, maybe I'm wrong. Anyway, a very dark song, and for some reason, reminds me of the movie "Se7en."
  • Eanne from Melbourne, AustraliaJust as a comment, we call the police themselves "The Jacks" over here in Australia. I always assumed there was a similar slang term in Armenia, maybe for the army? or any authority figure with a weapon? Anyway my 2c is that it is about the cops themselves! On the side of the freeway in the car, waiting for a speeder to make quota for the day so he can go home, the mouthwash in your eyes, well that would make them red, no?
Maybe he was smoking a fatty on the job? The corruption of authority maybe?

    My 2c.
  • Mike from Petersham, MaAnybody else love the intro/solo Daron played during their Astoria show? [think thats where he played it. Too lazy to check youtube.] Even better there are tabs for it!
  • Kyle from Camden, NjI thought that the song was about a junkie who was waiting in the car for his girlfriend to cop heroin.
  • Tyler from Mandan, NdThe booklet to their album Toxicity has a Mr. Jack in the "special thanks to" section.
  • Dodo from Middelburg, South AfricaSomeone once told me the song was about them being hijacked, but thinking about it now it does sound a little stupid.
  • Nick from Shoreham, United StatesI think the "7am morning, came to take us away" was referring to how the armenians were ordered out their houses by armed forces
  • Daniel from Chino Hills, Ca.....this is an excellent SOAD song.....
  • Yuya from Kyoto, JapanI love it when they yell "F--K YOU PIG!". I always laugh!
