Songfacts®:

  • "My Blood" is a collaborative rock song that unites The Amazons with Royal Blood's distinctive raucous sound. It features the signature thunderous drumming of Royal Blood's Ben Thatcher, while his bandmate Mike Kerr co-produced the track with The Amazons' guitarist, Chris Alderton.
  • "My Blood" is about the internal force that drives us to persevere and push past pain, especially when deeply committed to something.

"It's not something you can intellectualize; it's something you feel," said The Amazons vocalist Matt Thomson. "With age comes more responsibilities, obstacles, reasons to quit. But in 'My Blood' I wanted to illustrate a force out of our control, deep inside of us, that forsakes that rational thinking."
  • Though this is their first official collaboration, The Amazons and Royal Blood have a long-standing friendship and touring history. The two bands built a bond when The Amazons supported Royal Blood on their 2022 Typhoons arena tour. Matt Thomson sees Mike Kerr as a mentor.
  • "My Blood" was recorded for The Amazons' fourth album, 21st Century Fiction. The sessions took place at a trio of English studios, including Peter Gabriel's Real World in Wiltshire.

Mike Kerr was the first person they asked to come on board. "I think he was surprised, but excited and adamant that we were only going to do one song instead of the whole album," Matt Thomson told NME. "He said, 'We need to make sure that we shake each other's hands and remain friends after.'"

"He really helped us craft the middle eight; that chord change is so Mike," Thomson continued. "We had most of the album done at this point, so it was a free shot. There was a little bit of back and forth... I turned up on the first day with half the lyrics, so I was a little insecure about not having a complete grasp of the song. That's the only place where we butted heads – he was suggesting some amazing stuff... because it wasn't mine, I was just pushing him back. But I apologized afterwards, and we're all good!"
  • The 21st Century Fiction album title was intended to be provocative. "We all live in the 21st century," Thomson explained to The Sun. "We all engage and navigate fictions, whether it's on TV, in conversation at the pub or scrolling through your social media feed."
