It was producer John Congleton who proposed including a children's choir on "We All Die Young."
"When I suggested the song should have a call and response," lead vocalist Colin Meloy told UK newspaper The Sun, "John just said, 'Well it'll be a kids' choir, right?'"
He added: "Maybe that idea had already occurred to me but I was too shy to mention it? Maybe I thought everybody would think I was a sicko? But John was sicko enough to suggest it and have us go along with it."
Meloy continued: "We used band members' kids and their friends, maybe ten in total, and they really took to it! Kids love that stuff. They can get very dark."
The TV show Cheers was nearly canceled after its first season, but the theme song, "Where Everybody Knows Your Name," was very popular. To satisfy viewer demand, the theme was made into a full song and released as a single.
