Songfacts®:

  • Here, Kooks frontman Luke Pritchard sings of his cold-hearted love interest. At first the singer laments not knowing where he stands with her because she blows hot and cold, constantly dumping him, then getting back together again. As the song progresses, Pritchard finds some perspective and forgives the woman for her attitude. He too has a cold heart and understands why she feels like she doesn't fit into this cruel world. He gets her, so he is confident he can reach her icy heart.
  • The Kooks recorded this indie-pop track with a disco influence for 10 Tracks To Echo In The Dark. It fits nicely with the album's themes of the inner child and trying to find compassion.

The band brought in a children's choir from The Pauline Quirke Academy to close the song. "'Cold Heart' ends with the inner child," Pritchard explained to NME. Children talking back to you when you're an adult, trying to figure it all out."
  • Pritchard titled the album 10 Tracks To Echo In The Dark as if it was a cassette playlist. "That's an idea that came about from the front covers of old sci-fi novels I'd been reading in the pandemic," he said.
  • Pritchard co-wrote and co-produced "Cold Heart" with Tobias Kuhn. The German producer performed the same duties on Milky Chance's second album, Blossom.
