Songfacts®:

  • This song is about the Madden Brothers' relationship with their father. Benji Madden told HMV.com: "I think that's the best song we've ever written. There's a lot of different flavors."

Born in early 1979, Joel and Benji Combs were raised in suburban Maryland. Their father was an alcoholic who left the family on Christmas Eve, 1995, when the twins were 16. They later changed their surname to Madden - their mother's maiden name - to distance themselves from their father.
