Songfacts®:

  • "The Old News" is the third track on The Unthanks' 2022 album Sorrows Away. Written by the band's multi-instrumentalist and arranger Adrian McNally and co-vocalist Becky Unthank, it is one of two non-traditional songs on the record.
  • The song is about the power of stories and how they can be used to connect people and build community. Uncut magazine asked Becky Unthank if she envisions "The Old News" as a kind of reawakening. "I never thought I'd write a song that was joyful, because I've got a reputation for singing long, slow, sad notes in the band," she replied. "But that light-from-the-dark feeling was something we were yearning for. I've seen people dancing to it."
