Songfacts®:

  • Released on September 20, 2024, "Higher" is Tom Grennan's first new song since his June 2023 album What Ifs & Maybes. This time around, Grennan is exploring uncharted musical territory, delivering an upbeat, feel-good anthem. As the singer cheerfully puts it, "So much of the new music is uplifting - it makes you dance, makes you sing - but for me there's also the excitement of it being a sound I've never explored."
  • The lyrics of "Higher" capture the feeling of those perfect moments in life when everything seems to fall into place, creating a sense of pure bliss. Whether it's about falling in love or losing yourself in music, the song is about the feeling of being elevated beyond everyday existence.
  • Tom Grennan wrote "Higher" with Joel "Castle" Castillo, Toby McDonough and the song's producers, Ryan Daly, Riley McDonough and Connor McDonough.

The three McDonough brothers started their musical career together in College Park, Orlando, as members of the pop-rock band Before You Exit. The brothers have since transitioned from performing to focusing on songwriting,

The McDonough siblings have teamed up with Castle on several previous occasions, including co-penning Joji's "Glimpse Of Us," Mimi Webb's "Red Flags" and Marshmello and Kane Brown's "Miles On It." Ryan Daly also lent a hand towards "Red Flags."
  • "Higher" began life in Tom Grennan's head. He came up with the piano riff at some point when he wasn't in the studio. The melody and lyrics developed from this initial riff at London's Rak Studios. As Grennan explains:

"On the day we wrote 'Higher' I'd left the room but I just couldn't get that riff out of my head. It turned into a melody, which turned into a phrase."

Grennan then returned to the studio and spontaneously sang the key phrase. "I ran back into the studio, with the piano riff still playing, threw my hands up and sang: 'It's taking me higher.' Everyone in the room just went: 'Boom. That's it.'"
