Songfacts®:

  • American producer and DJ Tony Moran hooked up with dance music legend Martha Wash for this track. He told Billboard magazine about the song's meaning. "Whether as a child or adult, teenager or senior citizen, struggling to understand how to achieve their dreams and goals, how to be accepted in a particular situation or environment, how to be loved by those you only dream of loving you was the inspiration," Moran explained.

"All things are possible if you can love yourself. Dance empowers you to travel to places where love is endless, acceptance is ensured and you are 'Free' to be anyone you want to be," he added. "The message we are trying to send is all in the verse: 'I don't care what they think about you, I don't care what they think about me / If the feeling's in your soul, then it's up to you to make it true / When you're staring in the mirror, bringing hate upon your face, you should know your heart is gold and they can't take that away ... so be free.'"
  • Martha Wash was a member of the 1980s' duo The Weather Girls, who are best known for their hit single "It's Raining Men." After going solo she provided vocals on a number of classic dance tunes including Black Box's "Ride On Time"and C+C Music Factory's "Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)." In both instances the well-built Wash was replaced on the video by a model.
  • This was the third #1 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart for Moran following with "Walk Away" featuring Kristine W and "Keep Your Body Working," which also featured Martha Wash.
