Venom

Album: The Id (2021)

Songfacts®:

  • TRISHES (Trish Hosein) is a singer-songwriter of Trinidadian descent whose 2021 album The Id deals with the discrimination she faced growing up in America. This is particularly acute on "Venom," the first release from the project.

"If you are a woman of color in America, and you stand up for yourself, you will be called angry or aggressive," she told Songfacts. "For most of my life I blamed myself for my anger. I thought it was an innate flaw. I realize now that my anger came from my subconscious understanding of the inequalities and injustices that surrounded me, whether or not I had the understanding of what those were."
  • TRISHES took Songfacts through the lyrics: "The first verse of 'Venom' ['I was born in the year of the snake...'] demonstrates the mindset I was in before understanding where my anger manifested - believing that I was inherently bad or unkind.

In the second verse ['I was born in the hot sunrays...'] I explore the possibility that my 'venom,' or that anger, might be a result of environmental factors.

The chorus ['I got venom on the tip of my tongue...'] is a statement of empowerment, taking ownership and control over characteristics that I might have felt ashamed of, or have been criticized for, in the past."
  • Hakan Mavruk produces the track with TRISHES, using a loop of processed vocals as an element in the chorus.
