Songfacts®:

  • "Darling, I" is Tyler The Creator with the volume down, the lights dimmed - a soulful, hushed journey inward. The song also features Texan artist Teezo Touchdown, who lends his voice to the chorus.
  • Teezo Touchdown (born Aaron Lashane Thomas) isn't new to Tyler's universe. He first appeared on "RunItUp" from Tyler's 2021 album Call Me If You Get Lost.
  • Tyler uses an analogy to illustrate why monogamy is not for him. Each vehicle in his garage has its own personality, its own season, much like his feelings about romance. He wonders aloud why society insists on a one-size-fits-all approach to love when a little variety can be so… invigorating.
  • Bonita Smith, Tyler's mom, reminds him (and us) of the basics: honesty when expressing love is paramount. She bookends the track, offering her son grounding advice.
  • The song samples Q-Tip's 1999 debut single, "Vivrant Thing," which itself borrows from "I Wanna Stay" by the Love Unlimited Orchestra. Both Q-Tip and "I Wanna Stay" composer Barry White are credited as songwriters on "Darling, I."
