Songfacts®:

  • Transliterations of this song vary, title and lyrics, but according to Nonie Darwish in her autobiography, "Holy Warrior For The Sake of Allah" by Umm Kulthum is "a particularly fiery song that inspired war and violence." It was written for or dedicated to Nasser at the time of the Suez Crisis.

Gamal Abdel Nasser Hussein (1918-70) was President of Egypt from June 1956 until his death. He was the first Egyptian to lead Egypt since Cleopatra. The Suez debacle of 1956 was the making of him, but it led to the resignation of Anthony Eden as Prime Minister of England in January the following year. >>>
