"Reverend Charisma" is a song about the 1978 mass suicides at Jonestown's People's Temple led by the cult leader Jim Jones. It was one of the largest mass suicides in United States history, with 918 deaths.
There are references in the song to the poisoned Kool-Aid that Jones' followers were led to drink at Jonestown, which was located in northern Guyana.
The lyrics to "Heartbreak Hotel" were written by a steel guitar player who was once a dishwasher repairman. He was inspired by a newspaper story about a man who killed himself and left behind a note saying only, "I walk a lonely street."
