Willy Moon grew up in Wellington, New Zealand. He moved to London at the age of 18 and began making songs with Pro Tools on his personal computer as he didn't yet know any other musicians. In 2010, Moon released this song on Myspace, which got him noticed and he subsequently acquired a record deal with Island Records. It is the oldest track to appear on his debut album, Here's Willy Moon.
Phil Oakey recorded his vocals for "Don't You Want Me" in the studio bathroom. The recording was disrupted by guitarist Jo Callis reaching through an open window from outside to repeatedly flush one of the toilets.
