Guitarist/keyboardist Anand Wilder told Complex magazine regarding this song: "We were trying to be as minimal as possible. Just a few elements. I don't know if we achieved it, but that was the goal with that one. It was inspired by Prince. I wish Prince could sing it."
This song is actually two separate recordings glued together. Wilder told Complex magazine: "You can notice at the end. The tempo changes at the end. We took two different completely distinct recordings, and pasted them together."
Dido helped shut down a Neo-Nazi Web site after learning it was using "White Flag" to promote its hateful messages. Owners of the site had misinterpreted the track as racist and thought they represented their white supremacy views.
New Order took the title for "Blue Monday" from an illustration, which read "Goodbye Blue Monday," in the Kurt Vonnegut book Breakfast Of Champions. The image referred to the invention of the washing machine improving housewives' lives.
