Songfacts®:

  • In the Bryan family, patriotism runs deep – Zach's late mother DeAnn, father Dewayne, and his grandpa all served in the Navy. It was only natural for Zach to carry on this proud tradition, and at the tender age of 17 he enlisted in the US Navy, dedicating eight years to his service. He was honorably discharged in November 2021, carrying with him the experiences of a young man who'd seen the world, felt the sting of loss, and yearned for home.

In this song, Zach Bryan pours out the emotions of a soldier's heart. He laments the bittersweet journey of being shipped off to foreign lands and enduring the painful loss of loved ones.
  • The first two verses end with prayers to God, heartfelt and raw. In verse one, Bryan pleads with the Almighty to let him return home, his heart aching for the familiar comfort of Western girls and the places he loves. In verse two, the pain deepens as he shakes his fist at the Most High, his faith tested in the wake of his mother's passing in 2016.
  • On the chorus, we hear God's answer, a message of hope and resilience.

The sun's gonna rise tomorrow somewhere on the east side of sorrow

The Almighty reminds Bryan that brighter days await, even in the mid of life's darkest storms. With this belief firmly rooted in his heart, Zach Bryan is better equipped to face life's disappointments head-on.
  • In the third verse, Zach Bryan turns his lyrical gaze towards one of his former comrades from the Navy, a man who seems to have lost his way. The community watches in puzzlement, unable to pinpoint the exact cause of his inner turmoil. Is it something passed down through generations, alcohol-related, or the weight of a heavy conscience?
  • Zach Bryan produced and wrote "East Side of Sorrow" on his own. It's included on his eponymous album, released via Belting Bronco/Warner on August 25, 2023.
