Songfacts®:

  • Raised in the small town of Oologah, Oklahoma, Zach Bryan is proud of his rural roots. Here he recounts a tale of forbidden love for an "Oklahoma smokeshow."
  • A smokeshow is an exceptionally attractive individual, usually a girl. The word describes how the person is so smoking hot, you see the smoke coming off them. From what we can glean, the first mention of "smokeshow" was its entry into the Urban Dictionary in 2003.
  • Here, Zach Bryan takes on the persona of an Oklahoma bad boy who pines for the local god-fearing beauty. All he can do is dream, as the "Oklahoma smokeshow" is totally out of his league. Bryan is frustrated because he knows it can never be, so he spends his days getting wasted at the bar.
  • Bryan wrote "Oklahoma Smoke Show" himself, basing it "around the concept of growing up in a small town and no one really ever leaving."

Though Bryan portrays the main character as a drunken jerk, he didn't set out to be rude towards small-town folks. "I'm a small town Oklahoman and I'm proud of that," Bryan said. "I was just trying to make it feel spacey and tell the story of a lot of small town bar scenes and the rowdiness of it all, and the longing to be with someone you might never have."
  • Zach Bryan debuted the song during his set at Bonnaroo in Manchester, Tennessee on June 19, 2022. He included it on his Summertime Blues album released the following month.
  • "Oklahoma Smoke Show" reached its peak position of #72 on the Hot 100 a year and a half after its initial release after becoming a fan favorite in Zach Bryan's live shows.
  • "Oklahoma Smokeshow" features in the "Nightingale" episode of the CBS series Tracker, which premiered on February 23, 2025. In this episode, the character Angie sings it at a quiet biker bar, setting the scene for what unfolds.
