Get Over It

  • I turn on the tube and what do I see
A whole lotta people cryin' "Don't blame me"
They point their crooked little fingers at everybody else
Spend all their time feelin' sorry for themselves
Victim of this, victim of that
Your momma's too thin; your daddy's too fat

    Get over it
    Get over it
All this whinin' and cryin' and pitchin' a fit
Get over it, get over it

You say you haven't been the same since you had your little crash
But you might feel better if they gave you some cash
The more I think about it, Old Billy was right
Let's kill all the lawyers, kill 'em tonight
You don't want to work; you want to live like a king
But the big, bad world doesn't owe you a thing

    Get over it
    Get over it
If you don't want to play, then you might as well split
Get over it, get over it

It's like going to confession every time I hear you speak
You're makin' the most of your losin' streak
Some call it sick, but I call it weak

You drag it around like a ball and chain
You wallow in the guilt; you wallow in the pain
You wave it like a flag, you wear it like a crown
Got your mind in the gutter, bringin' everybody down
Complain about the present and blame it on the past
I'd like to find your inner child and kick its little ass

    Get over it
    Get over it
All this bitchin' and moanin' and pitchin' a fit
Get over it, get over it

    Get over it
    Get over it
It's gotta stop sometime, so why don't you quit
Get over it, get over it

  • Inner Child from Outside The Womb For 75 YearsThere is plenty of evidence for irresponsible blaming of others, some is due to childhood deprivation and some is not. The "inner child" just represents our history as children, some worse or better than others, for most a mixed bag. Regardless of the roots of psychological dysfunction as adults, kicking their asses doesn't do anything for healing, growth or development. You don't teach a child not to hit by hitting them.
  • Idliketofind from EarthAnother great eagles song. Lol, Apparently their was a lot of daytime TV watching, pre YouTube. Hey Tim, he didn't write that to hurt you. Yes" love that child in all of us. Listen to the 4 agreements, on YouTube. I've offered that suggestion to many. They choose not too do anything about their wounds... to them I now say, nothing or,Get over it .
  • Tim J from Upstate New YorkThe concept of the "inner child" was essential to my recovery from child abuse and alcoholism. You guys are great, no one can deny it, but some of your s--t sucks.
  • Jennifur Sun from RamonaHad a guest pastor at my old home town church use this song in his sermon. Hate to say this in a way, but I really dislike the fact that the world has become so PC. And yes there are times when you can't do something on your own and need help but have to agree with the person who mentioned that America has become Law Suite Happy. It stinks in a great many ways.
  • Jennifur Sun from RamonaSadly before Glenn died a lot of fans would have said this about their breakup with Don F.
  • Doug from MaineMermi, the litigious "lawsuit-happy" thing isn't just the U.S.; a few years ago I read that the phrase "where there's blame, there's a claim" originated in the U.K.
And Kirk, if you 're referring to Bob _Dylan_, keep in mind that at least some of the lyrics to his song "My Back Pages" "have been interpreted as a rejection of Dylan's earlier personal and political idealism, illustrating his growing disillusionment with the 1960's folk protest movement with which he was associated, and his desire to move in a new direction." (According to Wikipedia.) But he sure knew how to write a protest song. (Some critics called his "Jokerman" [1983] "a sly political protest.")
But however "liberal" the Eagles might seem to some, Don and Glenn were right with this one: "A whole lotta people cryin' 'don't blame me'." One of Don's other compositions (with Danny "Kootch" Kortchmar, 1982-ish), "Dirty Laundry," was about sensationalism in "news" media. The Wikipedia article about that song has links to "yellow journalism" and "narcotizing dysfunction." Yep; we have too much of that in the U.S., too.
  • Ken from Louisville, KyHenley wrote most of the lyrics with Frey helping with a line or a word. The music was strictly Frey's. On the History Of The Eagles, there's a clip of Frey instructing the rest of the band on playing the song: "Power chords with a Chuck Berry riff".
  • Lisa from Veradale, WaLove this song!! It is a great song to let off steam to after one encounters certain people.
  • Esskayess from Dallas, TxThe left-leaning Eagles surprised me with a song that actually preached personal accountability, which is so rare from their side of the aisle.
  • Mayank from Ranchi, IndiaGreat song and lyrics. One of the fast faced numbers by the band, its got nice guitar solos.
  • Larry from Monette, Falkland IslandsHi John,
I couldn't agree more. I'm pretty far right myself, an while the Eagles are much more Liberal in their music than I am, I love this song. "GET OVER IT!" There comes a time to move on! You can't continue to blame your parents or your environment for your shortcomings. I grew up in a fairly healthy home and I'm a disaster. My kids grew up in a bad situation and they are going to turn out OK, I think.

  • Alan from Greene, Ri"I'd like to find your inner child and kick its inner ass" This from a master lyricist. "The big bad world doesn't owe you a thing," Great stuff, plays on 'the big bad wolf' and the 'wolf at the door'(another Henley reference in 'NY Minute.')
The Eagles should play the Globe Theatre.
  • Buster from Xanadu, TnMore recently than Billy Shakespeare, Billy Carter, the late brother of President Jimmy Carter, made the comment that all lawyers should be shot. His comments (numerous and colorful) were made in response to his being constantly harassed by lawyers and news hounds because of his notorious politically incorrect comments on various political and foreign affairs issues, especially following his talking the Lybian government into loaning him a few million dollars.

    Remember "Billy's Beer"?
  • Chris from Lake Texoma, TxIt certainly applies to many areas of modern America. I work in the criminal justice system and see a bunch of people that need to hear Get Over It.
  • Christina from Fopo, Nygreat song. who cares what it's supposed to mean?
  • Kirk Fuller from Gadsden, United StatesIt is true that "Billy Shakespeare" wrote "let's kill all the lawyers, kill em tonight". But I think that Robert Denero said it best when he played Slylock in The Merchant of Venice. I have been listening to "ROCK" since Bill Haley did rock around the clock. In my personal opinion the Eagles are the quintessential band. They can do it all. John is right that they are a little political sometimes, but where would we be now if we didnt have Dillon?
  • Mermi from Nyc, NyThe main message in the song is about the huge issue in our legal issue in the US, where people seem to sue for just about everything. While talk shows are mentioned in the first verse (as posted above), the second verse blasts the lawsuits, etc. (You say you haven't been the same since you had your little crash
But you might feel better if I gave you some cash
The more I think about it, Old Billy was right
Let's kill all the lawyers, kill 'em tonight
You don't want to work, you want to live like a king
But the big, bad world doesn't owe you a thing)

  • Mike from Hueytown , AlNot the greatest sounding Eagles song but it SPEAKS volumes hahaha
  • Bill from Downers Grove, IlGlen and Don probably cranked this gem out waiting for Walsh to show up for rehearsal. I was totally overwhelmed by the MTV reunion show and hope these guys go on together for a long, long time.
  • Sara Mackenzie from Middle Of Nowhere, Flalways got me laughing when i was kid, because of that guitar part after they sing "get over it" now, i LOVE this song, it maybe not politically correct, but it always gets me to smile.

oh yeah, and the eagles broke up in 1980, NOT 1982: '82 was when it was told to the media that they were no longer functioning as a band. this was also the time frey and henley put out their 1st solo albums.
  • Phil from Pomona, CaThis song should have been a huge hit for the Eagles. I think that the reason it wasn't is that at the time it wasn't politically correct. To many people were comfortable blaiming someone else for their circumstances or their behavior. They didn't want to hear the message that life is about personal responsibility. My favorite line from the song; "I'd like to find your inner child and kick it's little a.." Amen to that!
  • Nathan from Austin, TxYou don't wanna work, you wanna live like a king, but the big bad word doesn't owe you a thing! Get Over It! That moron who sued McDonalds because she spilled hot coffee on herself (Oh yeah, I'm sure it's not hot... It's coffee. What kind of idiot needs a little warning to know that coffee is very hot?) needs to hear this song.
  • Ray from Stockton, NjI have to say that Smooth by Santana, Love Will Keep Us Alive and Get Over by The Eagles are probably the best songs of the 90s. Im 14 and i absolutely hate rap and disco. Just hate it. These songs have to be the best songs of the 90s by far.
  • Ray from Stockton, NjThis songs been on my iPOD for 2 years and i've never really listened to it, but i watched the Hell Freezes Over DVD and i love this song.
  • John from Millersville, MdMan, I love this song. It really FACILITATES my love of the Eagles. They have a definite liberal streak, and while I respect them for their tendency to keep politics out of shows, it always bothers me when I, as a true conservative, have to be at odds with them for that. This song, melodically, is far from my favorite from the Eagles, but the premise just puts me at the same level as my favorite band.
  • Dougie from Orlando, FlThese veterans of pop rock are so good live it's ridiculous. There's no subsitute for talent and experience.
  • Peter from Carmel, Inthe farewell tour part 1 was awesome!
