  • (Morning, today's forecast calls for blue skies)

Sun is shinin' in the sky
There ain't a cloud in sight
It's stopped rainin', everybody's in the play
    And don't you know
It's a beautiful new day? Hey

    Runnin' down the avenue
See how the sun shines brightly in the city
On the streets where once was pity
Mr. Blue Sky is living here today, hey

Mr. Blue Sky, please tell us why
You had to hide away for so long (so long)
    Where did we go wrong?

Mr. Blue Sky, please tell us why
You had to hide away for so long (so long)
    Where did we go wrong?

Hey you with the pretty face
    Welcome to the human race
A celebration, Mr. Blue Sky's up there waitin'
And today is the day we've waited for

Oh, Mr. Blue Sky, please tell us why
You had to hide away for so long (so long)
    Where did we go wrong?

    Hey there, Mr. Blue
We're so pleased to be with you
Look around, see what you do
    Everybody smiles at you

    Hey there, Mr. Blue
We're so pleased to be with you
Look around, see what you do
    Everybody smiles at you

(Mr. Blue Sky, Mr. Blue Sky)
    (Mr. Blue Sky)

Mr. Blue, you did it right
But soon comes Mr. Night creepin' over
Now his hand is on your shoulder
Never mind, I'll remember you this
    I'll remember you this way

Mr. Blue Sky, please tell us why
You had to hide away for so long (so long)
    Where did we go wrong?

    Hey there Mr. Blue (sky)
We're so pleased to be with you (sky)
Look around see what you do (blue)
    Everybody smiles at you

  • Dan from UkThe football team is called Birmingham City and their nickname is "the Blues", there is no Birmingham Blues.
    Great song either way.
  • Karen Darwin from DerbyshireThey don’t write songs like that anymore
  • Mike from NashvilleIt does not get any better, sorry John and Paul
  • Rifftvc15 from AlabamaIs anybody else heard something about how this song is supposed to be part two of the Paul McCartney portion of ‘A Day In the Life”? The guy wakes up, goes downstairs, has breakfast, and goes outside. The song changes. Same guy goes running down the Avenue…
  • Andrew from Ontario, CanadaCurrently used in a Telus Mobility commercial
  • Dietrich from Kalübbe, Schleswig-holstein, GermanySince my older brother bought this magical album very short after releasing it is one of the songs of my life. At that time it was definitely not that much cool to be a fan of ELO...but I like to hear all the songs still today.

Now again the song was used for some advertisment (Adobe) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M2OjUp3Ldy4
  • Someone from Dani, CaliforniaMake this song the first thing you listen to in the morning, and your entire day will be better.
  • Jane from Bristol , UkBrilliant on so many levels , so many reasons why. It’s simply up there with the greats .
I like the fact tricky lines have been miss-heard or missed for years by fans . It’s Mr. Blue Sky messing with you , having fun .
Just one of the best , uplifting tunes .. no one could possibly disagree ?
  • Sim from Cleveland RocksA great upbeat song to hear in this f--ked up world.
  • Esskayess from Dallas, TxAnyone else notice the similarity of the percussion and string riffs near the end of the song to those in 'Xanadu?'
  • Esskayess from Dallas, TxMore specifically, "Please turn me over" is heard because this song was placed as the last song on Side One of the second record.
  • Gary from Chandler, Az"Mr. Blue Sky" is currently (JUNE 2011) heard in U.S. comercials for Glidden paint. There are people all super jazzed about moving furniture and painting their walls all kinds of colors. the music works very well, however, I never thought it to be THAT much fun to paint!
  • Rd169 from Delhi, IndiaThis song also appears in the movie MegaMind and also in one of the episodes of American Dad's episode "Fart Break Hotel"
  • Ole from Copenhagen, DenmarkHey ELO fans
As mentioned Jeff is a great supporter for Birmingham Blues - the football (soccer) team in the city he grew up in
    Listen to

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-miaJPykZBQ

this is a song not very known, but in my mind some of the best Jeff have done and if you like Beatles you will not be disappointed - the song is a tribute to the city of Birmingham
  • Dougee from San Bernardino, CaThis song ranks up there with Chicago's "Saturday in the Park" for sheer mood raising. I was 12 when this came out and it evokes memories of hot summer days of fun. For those confused about the vocoded voices: The "please turn me over" occurs at the very end of the track (after the instrumental with the bass line that sounds a bit like the intro to Foreigner's "Hot Blooded.") The "Mr. Blue Sky, why?" is in the instrumental portion before the "...soon comes Mr. Night" passage.
  • Daniel from Tomball, TxI talk to the sky all the time, but i don't think it likes me cuz it doesn't answer.
  • Conor from Ecru, Ms...This song is so euphoric...I can't describe it any further...
  • Robert from Denver, CoAccording to Jeff Lynne, he considers this their best song ever, and the closest he ever came to musical perfection. I have to agree, this song is one of the best ever. I sure wish he would put the band back together.
  • Kurt from Evansville, InThis song was featured in the CSI episode Lab Rats. Musical montage following Hodges around.
  • Miked from Ann Arbor, MiThis song was featured in the commercials for the Nicolas Cage film, "Adaptation" but was not featured in the movie. Movie released in 2002.

This song has definitely stood the test of time as seen from all of it's constant use in the media.
  • Oldpink from New Castle, InGreat song, and the perfect antidote for feeling dreary.
This one should go on a mix CD alongside (The Who) "Going Mobile," (The Doobie Brothers) "Listen to the Music," and (The Allman Brothers Band) "Bluesky."
Load it into your player, then turn on repeat, continue until cured.
    ;-)
  • Ashley from Carlisle, PaI adore this song...it makes me feel indescribably happy.
  • Gregmon from Intelbuquerque, NmThis song is currently being used in the US by faltering airline Jet Blue.
  • Tony from Chicago, IlOne of my favorite ELO songs I love that album! when I see the sun I think about this song! it just so euphoric and beautiful.
  • Louise from Newcastle, United KingdomGreat song- I didn't notice the 'please turn me over bit'- I'll have another listen.
  • Lexx from Milton, Indiai think its funny how the constantness of this song simulates happyness, sort of like martha my dear- you know? i think thats funny.
  • Brian from Medway, OhOh,criminy. I just listened to it several times tonight and they ARE saying 'please turn me over'. I can't believe I've missed that all these years. Sorry for my previous comments :(
  • Brian from Medway, OhUh, I've listened to this song several hundred times in my life and played it again after reading that the voice sings "Please Turn Me Over." All I hear is ' Mi ster blue sky yyyy'. Sure, stretching out the 'yyyyyyy' may seem a bit silly, but it's also done earlier in the song when "Mister Blue Sky" is repeated three times consecutively.
    Maybe it's just me.
  • John from Falls Church, VaThis is also used in the corny Disney Movie "The Game Plan" staring The Rock. It's part of a practice montage, the song fits in well with the sequence.
  • Alyssa from York, MeThis song is one of my favorites as well, and was used for the commercials for Dan in Real Life, but sadly wasn't in the film.
  • Mike from Santa Barbara, CaIn recent performances, singer/model Rosie Vela, who dated Jeff Lynne, did backup vocals for some of ELO's songs, including this one.
  • Madison from Norway, MeThis is definitely one of my all-time favorite songs..
  • Logan from Troy, MtInteresting mistake: "Mr. Blue Sky" was played for previews and trailers for "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind", but actually doesn't appear in the movie at all.

It appears only on the Soundtrack, with an asterisk by the song
which views as disclaimer: "Does not appear in the movie."
  • Max from Laconia, NhThe best part of the entire song is when they say "Mr. blue sky, please tell us why, you had to hide away for so long...so long..."is that it starts in a deep voice then moves up to a high voice. its awsome! the cellos are wonderful, also.
  • David from Deerfield Beach, FlPosted 10/19/2007. I must say, I like a lot of music & for me to say that E.L.O. is my all-time favorite band is a real testimony to them! There is almost nothing musically that Jeff Lynne has ever done that I didn't like. "Mr. Blue Sky" in particular is one of my favorites by them. I especially consider the symphonic ending to this song to be one of the most beautiful & uplifting pieces that I have ever heard in all of the entire realm of music. Thank you, Jeff, for enriching my life with your music!

  • David from Deerfield Beach, FlPosted 10/19/2007. Echoeing Stefanie Magura's comment, I too also thought the synthesized voice at the end was saying, "Hey, Mr. Blue Sky, why?" I never realized it was saying "Please turn me over". Wow.
  • Tim from Groningen, NetherlandsThis song was used in a Dutch commercial as well. I thought it was about a "good-health-product" or something like that.
  • Guillermo from Miami, Flof all the bands that copied the beatles elo was the best by far, great song and it only proofs that jeff lynne is a genius.
  • Dan from Bellingham, WaThis song was used in the 2006 Doctor Who episode "Love & Monsters" (and to great effect, in my opinion).
  • Johnny from Los Angeles, CaI don't remember it from Eternal Sunshine but it sounds like it would fit in with that movie.
  • Mike from Sycamore, IlWill from Roswell. This was actually, Jeff Lynne's take on Paul's middle section of "A Day in the Life." Please don't act like you picked up on that on your own.
  • Zoloft from Milton, WvThis is such a beautiful song, it often brings tears to my eyes when I hear it. One of the most powerful songs in the history of rock and roll.
  • Alex from São Paulo, BrazilI remember when Out of the Blue album (double one in Brazil) was released, in 1977. The side called "the concert of a rainy day" was amazed. Mr. Blue Sky is the kind of music that could be written by Lennon&McCartney. The music structure and the backing vocals arrangements are very very similiar to The Beatles´way. I have discovery it again, by the DVD ZOOM, with DTS system sound. It is perfect, and Jeff Lynne a genius. Alex, Brazil
  • Randi from Hale, MoI had never heard of this song until my mother told me about it. She was ten years old when it came out in 1977, and it quickly became her favorite song. She used to stand up on a chair and pretend she was conducting the orchestra that plays in the background. I'm 18 but I enjoy listening to classic rock, so when mom talked me into buying the cd, I was all for it. Mr Blue Sky quickly became MY favorite song on the album. It's a very uplifting, happy song and I think every child should have the chance to hear it at least once, even if it is incredibly old.
  • Fool from Atherton, Cathis is like the best feel good song ever
  • Rene from Sacramento, CaThis song was also used as the theme song in the short lived series on NBC called "LAX". It starred Heather Locklear and Blair Underwood as the runway and terminal managers, respectively.
  • Robert from Halesowen, EnglandM & S are now using a shortened version of it in their latest UK commercial for women's fashions.
  • Yoske from Jerusalem, Israelthere are some references to "A Day in the Life": the bell ,the panting and the McCartney part of ADITL is in the air.
The "Please turn me over" effect is a motif in the concerto; before each song in the concerto the "choir" says something, kill me if I get what. Also, "Please turn me over" is another reference to ADITL - in the very end of the song, if you didn't have an automatic record player, it would give you an annoying fragment featuring the beatles talking over and over, until you run to the record player and put up the needle.
  • Gabriel from Puerto Rico, United Statesthe first time I heard it was in the eternal sunshine commercial and i fell in love with it! Its the best get-happy song ive ever heard.
  • Keith Major from Bristol, EnglandI understand that Jeff Lynne remembered, as a child, "Sparky and the magic piano" which gave inspiration for the vocoder on this song.
  • Stefanie Magura from Rock Hill, Sci love the song1 It's so positive and uplifting! Btw, i thought the voice at the end said "Mr. blue sky Why?"
  • Lisa from Manchester, CtJeff Lynne was an admitted Beatlemaniac, as noted in the Afterglow liner notes. I believe it also mentioned that he paid tribute by playing similarly to The Beatles in some of his songs.
  • Johnny from Edinburgh, ScotlandApparently, John Lennon thought ELO were better than the Beatles. I presume he was a fan.
  • Dave from Cardiff, WalesOne of the first songs to feature a vocoder, which up until this time had been considered a useless folly. ELO used vocoders on quite a few of their songs.
  • Will from Roswell, GaTo me this song sounds like the second part of The Beatles' "A Day In The Life." Maybe thats just me though.
  • Jess from Springfeild, IlThis song was used in the Jim Carrey movie: Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind. A beautiful yet silly song for such a crazy and yet perfect, touching movie.
