Winchester Cathedral

  • Winchester Cathedral
    You're bringing me down
You stood and you watched as
    My baby left town

    You could have done something
    But you didn't try
    You didn't do nothing
    You let her walk by

Now everyone knows just how much I needed that gal
She wouldn't have gone far away
If only you'd started ringing your bell

    Winchester Cathedral
    You're bringing me down
You stood and you watched as
My baby left town Writer/s: GEOFF STEPHENS

  • AnonymousWhat was the location of the cathedral itself? England Or Tennessee?
  • Tony Dickenson from Glen Innes AustraliaIt might be just an urban legend, but I heard on the radio one time that the song was actually about the chamber of a gun. And that the "Winchester Cathedral" meant the loading chamber of a Winchester firearm, and that "If only you started ringing your bell" meant that "If only you had fired, it would have got the girls attention, and she would have turned around and not have kept walking and gone away". But whether it is about a gun or the famous place of worship, it is one of the best and catchy hits of all time, whether done with lyrics or just as an instrumental. Well done New Vaudeville Band. On that one and Finchley Central as well.
