  • As the autumn wind whispers through
    The tall and lonely pines
And the hour of fate is drawing close at hand
A free bird falling from the sky
Brings a bitter end to another southern man

There's a grey ghost running through the night
Echo of the sadness and the pain
Grey ghost running through the night
The man is gone but his spirit will remain

The fast life and the music is just a grim disguise
For the heartache and the fear of growing old
Without the ones that mean the most
    Makes you realize
You're the one who's left out in the cold

There's a grey ghost running through the night
Echo of the sadness and the pain
Grey ghost running through the night
The man is gone but his spirit will remain

The dealer of death has dealt the losing hand
And it's a cold fact the cards don't ever lie
You're the fire, dream of things to come
And such a price to pay
When the memories are all that's left behind

There's a grey ghost running through the night
Echo of the sadness and the pain
Grey ghost running through the night
The man is gone but his spirit will remain

  • Fed from Summerfield IlWow...just turned 65 and did not know this song or its history. Big Skynyrd fan, Outlaws fan, and Henry Paul fan. Great music, Great memories...
  • John from Pleasanton, CaMe too. I saw these guys at Hurley Mountain Inn and thought they were awesome. Still enjoy their music almost 30 years later.
  • Nancy from San Antonio, TxI remember hearing The Henry Paul band as a young teen, I grew up in upstate New York and in the late 70's early 80's they played at a lot of different venues up there. I never relized Grey Ghost was written about Ronnie van Zant, I woke up just this morning with that song in my head and it all clicked together.

It's funny as we get older how much more there is to learn and discover about the music we grew up on...I love this band and their songs are incredible.
