Songfacts®:

  • Bjorn Ulvaeus of Abba wrote the lyrics after watching his 7-year-old daughter Linda go off to school, realizing she was beginning to "slip through his fingers" and grow up. It's one of his favorites; Ulvaeus said of the song, "Every parent knows that feeling, even if you were with them every waking hour you'd still feel that you were missing something."
  • The lead vocal is performed by Linda's mother (and Bjorn's ex-wife) Angetha. They also had a son named Christian together before their divorce.
  • In February 2025, Australian singer-songwriter Jude York was visiting his family home in Queensland, Australia, and sat down at the piano to play one of his favorite ABBA songs, "Slipping Through My Fingers." As he sang, his mother, who was in the kitchen, spontaneously joined in and harmonized with him. York had been filming himself and captured the whole thing on camera.

When he posted it to TikTok, the video exploded, amassing over 40 million views and 29,000 comments, with celebrities including SZA and Lili Reinhart responding to it.

York subsequently released an official cover of the song through Spinnin' Records, and the wave continued building. He performed it live at the TikTok Australia Awards in November 2025, again alongside his mother. The performance continued circulating into 2026, keeping the original ABBA song in the cultural conversation.
