  • Aespa's name combines "ae" - the initials of "Avatar X Experience" - with the English word "aspect," meaning "two sides," to symbolize the concept of "meeting another self and experiencing a new world." This duality is baked into the group's entire identity: each member has a virtual counterpart called an "ae" that exists in a fictional metaverse universe.
  • Aespa helped bring both the metaverse concept and hyperpop music into the mainstream of K-pop. Their cyberpunk sci-fi lore - in which the four real members and their four digital avatars form a crime-fighting unit battling a villain called Black Mamba - unfolded across music videos and online content like a serialized superhero franchise, earning multiple explainers in major outlets and a devoted fan base who call themselves MYs.
  • Before debuting, the members went through notoriously intense training. Ningning joined SM Entertainment's pre-debut training team, SM Rookies, in 2016, while Winter and Karina joined the following year. Karina told W Magazine that the process was "relatively very competitive and intense," with "a constant worry and fear that things might change," recalling groups who had filmed videos and were close to debuting before their projects were canceled.
  • Aespa debuted on November 17, 2020, with the single "Black Mamba," setting a record for the highest number of YouTube views in 24 hours for a K-pop group debut video - 21.4 million. They held the record until November 2023 when Babymonster's video for "Batter Up" gained 22.59 million views within the first day of its release on YouTube.
  • Giselle is the group's multilingual member, fluent in Korean, Japanese, and English. Born Uchinaga Aeri in Tokyo to a Korean mother and Japanese father, she grew up speaking Korean at home but did not become seriously interested in K-pop until high school. "I realized it really does have a lot of impact around the world and it gives a lot of good energy," she told W Magazine. "It also helped me through the tough times. I wanted to be that for someone else."
  • Winter - born Kim Minjeong on New Year's Day, 2001 - was practically raised on K-pop. She told W Magazine that her mom listened to K-pop and K-drama soundtracks while pregnant with her, and that she and her brother used to "play the fake guitar and sing and dance around to music" as children. She has the home videos to prove it.
  • Karina has an unusual hidden talent: she can pick up small objects - including a TV remote - using only her feet. She revealed the skill during the group's first radio show appearance in late 2020, when each member shared a fun fact about themselves.
  • In June 2023, Aespa became the first K-pop act to perform at the Governors Ball Music Festival in New York City. Giselle was absent due to illness, but Karina, Winter, and Ningning went ahead.
  • Aespa's second mini-album, Girls, released in July 2022, set a new record on the Hanteo Chart as the best first-week seller by a K-pop girl group in Hanteo history, shifting over 1.1 million copies.
  • On February 10, 2021, Aespa became the first K-pop act to be named brand ambassadors for French luxury house Givenchy, featuring in collections by creative director Matthew M. Williams. The partnership was notable not just for the prestige of the house involved, but because it came less than three months after the group had debuted, making them one of the fastest-rising K-pop groups to secure a major luxury fashion deal.
