Many of Cake's songs deal with cars, and in this one, a race car driver is feverishly trying to win but to no avail: the race ends, the moon comes up, and he's still out there driving as fast as he can. This could be a metaphor for straining to achieve at any futile endeavor, perhaps in the corporate world.
"The Distance" was released in 1996 as the first single from Cake's second album, Fashion Nugget, and it became their breakthrough. Their first album, Motorcade of Generosity, was released in 1994 and got little attention, in part because the group is hard to classify. But "The Distance" found a home on Modern Rock radio, introducing many listeners to the band. The next single was a wry cover of "I Will Survive" that also did well. By this time, Cake was refined in the studio and in concert, so they were ready for the influx of new fans. The album went on to sell over 2 million copies in America, and Cake landed a few more hits over the next several years, including "Never There" and "Short Skirt/Long Jacket." "The Distance" remains their most popular song.
Most Cake songs were written by their lead singer, John McCrea, but "The Distance" was composed by their guitarist, Greg Brown, who was with the band until 1998 and died in 2026 at 56. Brown was surprised when the song was chosen as the first single from their Fashion Nugget album.
Cake lead singer John McCrea sees this as a song about the "failure of success." He told the Professor of Rock: "It's a sad song, because there is no success. That's so sad, right? You can explode into the world with great magnificence, and still feel like the guy underneath the Mickey Mouse head when the fan batteries have stopped working and everyone wants your autograph."
"Going The Distance" is a phrase used in some sports to imply victory. If a football player breaks free for a touchdown, he would be "going the distance." As such, the song often appears in promos for various sporting events (often auto racing), stripping the irony completely.
The music video was directed by Mark Kohr, whose work includes "Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)" by Green Day and "Just A Girl" by No Doubt. It sets the race as a corporate one, with white-collar workers jockeying for position, with one guy running out of the office and all the way into the ocean.

It was shot on a Bolex film camera with a budget of just $59,000. "I decided it's about human nature, it's about human insanity," Mark Kohr told Songfacts. "And then there was a film that I saw when I was a kid with the lemmings going over the cliff. There are these things called lemmings that are like mice, and they have a population explosion every so often and then start running like crazy in one direction. Lemmings would gather and they would just be running across the open landscape in hordes, and at the end of the film, they come to the cliff that's over the ocean and they run off the cliff and they fall into the ocean to their deaths en masse. I thought that would be perfect for this song, so that's why all those metaphors are there: the businessman symbolizing civilization and futile activity, cracking and then running for no reason towards destruction. Obviously it's what we do when you look at climate change.

So all of that stuff in the video is a metaphor for that and supported it. He's passing the animals, and some of them are even wearing numbers like in a race, but he's beating them like we just lucked out. And there's that shot of him with the tapestry in the background of Greek people, which I thought was great because it's the continuance of human endeavor and how we've propagated in these ways where we think that we're the winners, but where is it leading us?"
John McCrea's vocal was his first take. He wanted to do more, but Greg Brown, who wrote the song, wouldn't let him, telling him, "If you change it, you'll ruin it."
That little flute-like riff is a melodica played by Cake trumpet player Vincent DiFiore.
When we first meet the driver, he's "reluctantly crouched at the starting line," an indication that he never wanted to be in this race. But once the green light flashes and he takes off, he can't stop racing. This shows the nature of competition, how we can get drawn in and even obsessed with winning, often to our own detriment.
Relient K covered the song in 2011, and you can hear a squeaky version in the 2007 Alvin And The Chipmunks video game.
The song was used in The Simpsons 2000 episode "Saddlesore Galactica." It also appears in episodes of Psych and Fresh Off The Boat.

He does not win the race and the only way to get better at running is to keep on running. It is way different then racing cars where you don't depend on your body. I have gone on night runs before hoping to get ahead of my opponents by extra training. Obviously there could be so many meanings for this song. But when I heard it I instantly thought running because thats what I surround my life with.

I see these comments and I'm fascinated by the different ideas and such, and what they could each mean for each person. For me, this song is about a guy who's goal is this girl, and he never turns astray or moves on from her, whereas the others have moved on and found happiness in places other than they originally planned. But he doesn't, he strives and fights to be with her, and she too, wants to be with him, but circumstances make this hard, yet he still fights through it, he's going the distance for what he truly wants.

Bowel-shaking earthquakes of doubt and remorse assail him, impale him with monster truck force"- This man is obviously traumatized and forced to relive this his experiences- which just screams PTSD. Even today, soldiers aren't given the proper care after they experience horrific circumstances in war zones. And in the song, its talking about how even after he's received all the glory he still isn't satisfied because he has to live with his actions. Also, the part where "she's hoping in time that her memories will fade", "She" could have been his love before he was sent to war but after he came back he changed and wasn't the same person anymore. The trauma he lived through changed him, and he can no longer see to her needs like he used to.
I also found a bunch of other references that explain my theory, so feel free to search through the song and dive into the lyrics. And my theory may not be 100%, but this is just how I interpreted it.

Clearly the guy "still burns" for her. The one thing that is confusing is the aspect of leaving her alone in a time of need. Makes you wonder if that is how he lost her to begin with.

It's about the stubborn loser who can't/won't admit defeat, telling themselves that if they can only keep going, they may still win the prize. The spectators know it's hopeless.

It's an apt metaphor for romantic pursuit, once she's given herself to another, but still the loser hopes that by doing his best, she'll somehow turn around. I think, however, the song is trying to say the loser is deluding himself with the thoughts (she's all alone in her hour of need). Sad, though.
