Songfacts®:

  • This is a track from My Shame Is True, the ninth studio album by American punk rock band Alkaline Trio. The song title refers to the Egyptian monk Anthony (250AD-356AD). On losing his parents in 270, Anthony was impressed by the scripture in the Gospel of Matthew, "Go and sell what you possess and give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven", and gave away his inheritance. He went to live in the Libyan Desert as a solitary hermit dedicating himself to lonely contemplation thus becoming one of the first Christian monks.

Accounts of Anthony enduring supernatural temptation during his sojourn in the desert has been an often-repeated subject in Western art and literature. Many artists, including Hieronymus Bosch, Max Ernst, and Salvador Dalí, have depicted these incidents and the tale was retold and embellished in prose by Gustave Flaubert in The Temptation of Saint Anthony.
  • The song is not the only art reference on My Shame Is True - its lead single is titled "I Wanna Be a Warhol."
  • Vocalist and guitarist Matt Skiba commented to Billboard magazine on the writing of the cut: "The first line of the song is always the hardest thing to write," he said. "And then after that, the song should - unless it sucks - it should write itself. There's a magic to that urgency and I think it comes across through the song. Those are the kind of songs that I like to play live, people in the crowd like 'em more."
  • The album title is a pun on Elvis Costello's My Aim Is True record. It was scribbled on the studio's ideas board by drummer Derek Grant, when he got up to have a wee.
