Songfacts®:

  • "Party Til You Puke" was the first of Andrew W.K.'s "party" songs, forming the building blocks for his image and music. He released the song on an EP also called Party Til You Puke in 2000 when he was signed to the Michigan label Bulb Records. A year later he got a deal with Island Records, which introduced him to the world with the single "Party Hard," establishing him as the ultimate party starter. This was a cultivated image that came with a signature look: white from head-to-toe with an album cover showing blood gushing from his nose, a side-effect of all that partying. "Party Til You Puke" was included on that debut album, I Get Wet, along with "It's Time To Party."

Of course, he was asked to share his thoughts on partying in every interview, which he did by explaining how the party is about living life to its fullest, taking in every sensation. He stuck with the theme, releasing more "party" songs throughout his career (" "Long Live the Party," "The Party Never Dies"...) and digging deeper into the philosophical meaning of it all, with speaking engagements and an advice column in the Village Voice.
  • Andrew W.K. wasn't really living the "Party Til You Puke" lifestyle at the time, but he was pretty convincing. He recalled to NME: "The picture of me with a bloody nose on the cover of the I Get Wet album was seen as condoning drug use. I hadn't even done drugs and songs like 'Party Til You Puke' were my idea of what it would be like to go wild, but people asked my mum what was happening to me. My life was being turned upside down, but it felt like being at the top of a rollercoaster: incredible."
  • There's a big distinction between "Party Til You Puke" and Andrew W.K.'s other songs in this milieu, particularly "Party Hard." In "Party Til You Puke" there's lots of bad (and highly illegal) behavior, with Andrew chanting:

We dent, we dope, we choke, we gun
We kill, we stab, we rob, we steal

"Party Hard" and later "party" songs are more motivational, with lyrics about doing your own thing and getting the most out of life. For example:

We do what we like and we like what we do
  • After releasing his second album in 2003, Andrew W.K. got in a legal dispute with his creative director over how much of his persona was crafted by this person. He released another album in 2006 but recorded very sporadically from that point forward as the case unfolded. In the meantime, he showed up a lot of TV, often as a host for music and pop culture specials like 100 Greatest Artists Of All Time and 100 Greatest Hard Rock Songs. In 2023 he married the actress Kat Dennings.
