Album: Dirty Gold (2013)

Songfacts®:

  • This fiery luxury-brand-inventory song was produced by Markus Dravs (Arcade Fire, Coldplay, Björk). Released as the lead single from Dirty Gold, it premiered on Zane Lowe's BBC Radio 1 show on August 27, 2013 and was made available for purchase on October 15, 2013.
  • The song title comes from the lyric "Bitch I'm on that boss s--t. On that upper echelon." Echelon refers to a rank within an organization or profession, so an upper echelon is a high-up rank and Haze is boasting of being on a higher level above most people.
  • Speaking to NME in March 2014, Haze admitted that she is no longer able to listen to this track. She said: "I literally cannot deal with this song anymore. Whenever I listened to my album, it's the second track in and I hit skip right away. It's trauma – it gives me flashbacks to recording, working and working at it to get it right."

"I had to rework it so I could play it live without going crazy," Haze added, "so now it's got crazy heavy metal guitars."
