What Musicians Are Related to Other Musicians?

Famous musicians have a tendency to marry other famous people, which makes sense if you believe like attracts like. They're also likely to have other famous family members, which we can attribute to genetically shared talent and opportunities that aren't available to the average American Idol contestant.

There are plenty of nuclear families on this list, but many of these family trees have tangled roots veering in unexpected directions, like Liv Tyler's two rock star dads and Melissa Etheridge's choice of sperm donor. The Cohen/Wainwright clan is particularly intriguing.

Here is our long list of musical marriages and family relations. The marriages, of course, are subject to change.

  • Daniel from Dc"The Cohen/Wainwright clan is particularly intriguing." Indeed. The Cohen/Wainwright/ROCHE dynasty is more intriguing than just what is listed here.

The article mentions that Viva Katherine Wainwright Cohen (the daughter of Loudon Wainwright’s son Rufus and Leonard Cohen's daughter Lorca) is named for Rufus' mother Katherine, but it does not mention that Katherine Wainwright (Louden Wainwright's ex-wife), is an award-winning musician and half of the Canadian singer-songwriter sister duo Kate and Anna McGarrigle. Anna McGarrigle's daughter Lily Lanken is also a Canadian pop vocalist.

Loudon Wainwright's younger sister Sloan Wainwright is also a gifted singer-songwriter with an amazing contralto voice and excellent, musically eclectic albums (she is the aunt of musicians Martha Wainwright and Rufus Wainwright). Sloan’s son Sam McTavey is also a musician.

Prolific Louden also married Suzzy Roche, one of the three sisters in the band The Roches (Suzzy, Maggie, and Terre Roche). Louden and Suzzy's daughter Lucy Wainwright Roche is also a musician (and is half-sister to Rufus and Martha). The three Roche sisters have a brother who is a musician, David Roche. Suzzy Roche's son Felix McTeigue is also a singer-songwriter.

Louden Wainwright's third wife is actress Ritamarie Kelly, and his fourth child, daughter Alexandra (Lexie) Kelly Wainwright sings on Louden's latest album. So the Cohen/Wainwright/Roche musical dynasty rolls on.

And there may be more that I haven’t heard about yet.

  • Garrett from OregonThen there's also the case of Bill Wyman of the Rolling Stones. According to imdb:

"While married to Mandy Smith, his son, Stephen, was engaged to Mandy's mother"

So his son would have been his father in-law, while Bill's son would have been his own grandfather.
