Songfacts®:

  • The original version of this song was recorded for the British singer-songwriter Mika's third album, The Origin of Love, and featured vocals from the song's co-writer Priscilla Renea. It was heavily based on the tune "Popular" from the musical Wicked and used several expletives. For the track's single release Mika changed the arrangement and rewrote some of the lyrics to remove most of the swearing. He also removed Renea's vocal contribution and replaced her with Ariana. This is the version that features on Ariana's debut album, Yours Truly.
  • The song was released to the iTunes Store on December 21, 2012, and subsequently peaked at #92 on the Billboard Airplay chart. It subsequently entered the Hot 100 after the release of Ariana's Yours Truly album.
  • "Popular" is sung by Glinda the Good Witch in Wicked. A decade after interpolating the song, Grande's casting as Glinda in the film adaptation of Wicked marked a full-circle moment for her.
