Songfacts®:

  • This song begins "For fifty-five days I've been flying around the world"; as might be expected, there is a story behind it. "Negative Earth" was written mostly by Mel Pritchard, and was inspired by the Apollo 13 incident of April 1970. Commanded by Cleveland born James A. Lovell, the craft was crippled by an explosion two days after launch. Fortunately, the problem was fixed and the crew managed to return to Earth safely, although the projected Moon landing had to be abandoned. >>
