Songfacts®:

  • In the old days, you could send a package C.O.D., meaning Cash On Delivery. It meant you paid for it when you received the item. In this song, Billy Ocean is looking for a little L.O.D., or Love On Delivery, when he comes home after a hard day of work.
  • Billy Ocean is best known for his '80s hits like "Caribbean Queen (No More Love On The Run)" and "Suddenly," but he started his career in the '70s, first with some bands and then as a solo artist under his real name, Les Charles. His music didn't connect until 1976, after he signed with GTO Records and teamed with the American producer Ben Findon. Together, they wrote "Love Really Hurts Without You," a Motown-inflected song that became his first hit, going all the way to #2 in the UK, where Ocean was based. His next single was "L.O.D. (Love on Delivery)," also co-written by Findon with a Motown vibe. It didn't do nearly as well and Ocean took a dive over the next several years, but his '80s resurgence was extraordinary, with three #1 hits in America: "Caribbean Queen," "There'll Be Sad Songs
(To Make You Cry)," and "Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car."
