This was released as the lead single from British singer-songwriter Bo Bruce's debut album, Before I Sleep. Bruce penned the song with by Shelly Poole, formerly of the Top 20 recording act Alisha's Attic and Israeli-born Electronica producer and artist Matt Schwartz.
Bruce explained the story behind the song to The Nottingham Post: "It's just a heartbreak song," she said. "You want to be independent but then someone comes along. You think they're going to help you and you can battle the world together. Then, when they leave it's like 'what on earth... I didn't even want to do this in the first place. I can do this on my own.'"
The lyrics to "Heartbreak Hotel" were written by a steel guitar player who was once a dishwasher repairman. He was inspired by a newspaper story about a man who killed himself and left behind a note saying only, "I walk a lonely street."
