Songfacts®:

  • "Deep In A Dream" is a jazz song first recorded by Bob Crosby and His Orchestra in 1938 and released on the Decca label. Jimmy Van Heusen (music) and Eddie DeLange (lyrics) wrote the song together.

The lyrics, sung by Marion Mann, describe smoking a cigarette and dreaming of a lover. Elegant and simple, the whole thing is pretty straightforward and a product of a simpler time.
  • Crosby, who is Bing's little brother, recorded it first on October 1938, but three other acts quickly followed suit: Artie Shaw and His Orchestra, Kay Kyser and His Orchestra, and Cab Calloway and His Orchestra (yes, "His Orchestra" was actually associated with all three) all recorded their own versions one month later in November 1938.

In 1955, Frank Sinatra did the song for his album In the Wee Small Hours.
