Songfacts®:

  • This euphoric acid-jazz-pop song is a collaboration with Damon Albarn. It explores themes of longing, introspection, and the search for solace.
  • The song presents two contrasting perspectives on heaven. Bombay Bicycle Club lead singer Jack Steadman sings of an intangible, personal heaven while in pursuit of personal dreams and passions, even if the outcome is uncertain. Damon Albarn finds heaven in connection and small moments of joy and beauty.
  • "Heaven" appears on Bombay Bicycle Club's sixth studio album, My Big Day, which Steadman produced.
  • When Steadman demoed the track, he imagined a maximalist vibe with strings and brass inspired by The Beatles' "A Day In The Life." He and Albarn have worked together on various projects together over the years, so he played a rough mix of the album to the Gorillaz frontman to get his feedback. As Albarn listened to the tracks, he suggested ideas. When "Heaven" came, Albarn liked it so much that he asked for a microphone and started to improvise a melody and lyrics over the music.

"It was all very spontaneous," Steadman told The Sun. "The hard part was getting him to find time to finish the lyrics because he's so busy. I think he ended up writing them on a long car journey across California after playing Coachella with Gorillaz. He never stops."
  • British film score composer Sally Herbert brought her expertise to the production, arranging the string, brass, and woodwind sections. Back in the early 1990s, Herbert was one half of the duo Banderas, whose hit single "This Is Your Life" peaked at #16 on the UK Singles Chart. After Banderas, Herbert embarked on a solo career, crafting scores for movies like Jean Genet Is Dead and Somehow. Her collaborations in the pop music sphere extend to renowned artists like Travis and Mumford & Sons.
