• "Plans" is Brandon Flowers' tender, deeply personal song about looking back at the grand designs you made for your life and realizing things didn't turn out according to the blueprint.
• Flowers wrote the track about his own unrealized ambitions in adulthood, linking those feelings to his return to his hometown of Nephi, Utah. It explores much of the same emotional ground as The Killers' 2021 album Pressure Machine: the pressure to succeed, the promises we make to ourselves, and the quiet reckoning that happens when reality takes a different path.
  
  Throughout the song, Flowers reflects on the weight of small-town life and the dreams that never quite made it out of Nephi. He looks back on ambitions that once seemed completely achievable:

  "We all make all sorts of promises to ourselves. And then at some point we realize that we haven't kept many of the promises we made," Flowers told Rolling Stone Japan.
• The line "hold me in your arms," might sound like a standard romantic plea at first listen. It isn't. Flowers is asking for help rather than singing to a lover, a moment of vulnerability admitting that even the person who spent years insisting he had everything mapped out sometimes needs saving.
• The track is the lead single and fourth song on Thrasher, Flowers' third solo album. As he got older, Flowers started listening more to his father's country-western records, especially Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and Merle Haggard. That influence helped shape the sound of Thrasher, giving "Plans" its reflective, Countrypolitan feel.
  
  "Plans" was the last song recorded for the project. It didn't start out as a country tune; Flowers originally recorded the idea as a quick voice memo on his phone before slowing it down and reshaping it into its final country-influenced sound.
• Thrasher functions as a spiritual sequel to Pressure Machine, once again tapping into Flowers' childhood in Nephi, where he lived from age 8 until his junior year of high school. The songs grew out of the emotional fallout of writing Pressure Machine, with Flowers admitting he simply "didn't want to leave" that creative headspace.
  
  Flowers described the song and album as the moment he realized he could write about topics that were directly personal to him, calling those memories "this whole other treasure trove to unlock and dive into." He later explained that it took time to realize his story "was never just my own," and that turning those memories into songs helps him process them.
• "Plans" was written entirely by Flowers and produced by Shawn Everett and Jonathan Rado, the same team behind The Killers' Imploding the Mirage (2020) and Pressure Machine (2021).
• The song's rich Countrypolitan arrangement features a lineup of Nashville session players and frequent Killers collaborators, including legendary session harmonica player Charlie McCoy. McCoy played on all four of Bob Dylan's Nashville albums (Blonde on Blonde, John Wesley Harding, Nashville Skyline, and Self Portrait) recorded between 1966 and 1970.
  
  "He's definitely my favorite of all the people who participated this time," Flowers told Rolling Stone Japan. "In a way, he's the star of this album. His playing is unbelievably amazing. Before we recorded each song, we read through the lyrics together from the beginning, which I had on my smartphone. He wanted to reinforce what I was singing about with his playing, to reinforce what I was trying to say, or express it in his own way. When I saw that, I thought, 'Nobody in my band ever asks me to do that.'"
• Country singer-songwriter Margo Price sings background vocals. She appears on multiple tracks across Thrasher after a mutual friend connected her with Flowers.
