Songfacts®:

  • Brandy Clark has had songs cut by Reba McEntire ("The Day She Got Divorced"), The Band Perry ("Better Dig Two") and Miranda Lambert ("Mama's Broken Heart"). The Washington native had tried to sell this ode to self-medication to various artists for years without success, so she recorded it herself for her debut album, 12 Stories. "It was one of those songs where everyone loved it, but it was too dark, or the subject matter was just too far, so, yeah," Clark told Spin magazine. "To me, it's the centerpiece of the whole record, so I'm thankful that no one else cut it. It just fits."
