Songfacts®:

  • Bruce Springsteen was born in a Roman Catholic household, and though that turned him off religion, he didn't lose his faith. Throughout his career, the Boss has peppered his lyrics with spiritual imagery and here he uses biblical language to evoke fond memories of a romance.
  • Springsteen has quite often used spiritual language in his songs; some examples are "The Promised Land," "We Are Alive," plus "House of a Thousand Guitars" and "The Power Of Prayer" on Letter To You.

Springsteen explained to Apple Music's Zane Lowe that Letter To You is partially "a reflection and meditation on time passing and loss of friends." He added that the subject matter led to a natural undercurrent of spirituality derived from his Catholic upbringing. "Those little three-minute records and the 180-second character studies that came through pop music were like these little meditations and little prayers for me," Springsteen said. "And that's what I turned them into. And my faith came in and filled those songs, and gave them a spiritual dimension. It's an essential part of your life."
