Songfacts®:

  • Burning Spear is a devout follower of the Rastafarian movement, and his music often touches on spiritual themes. This hypnotic devotional is framed by a subtle trombone refrain. "In the song, I speak about Yah prayed for I and you, until his sweat turned to blood," Spear explained to Mojo magazine. "I don't deal with colorism, nationality, or religion; I say glory to Jah, the creator. We give thanks to the universe, to nature."
  • "He Prayed" is the closing track of Studio One Presents Burning Spear, the Jamaican musician's debut studio album. Burning Spear recorded the album at Studio One, a recording facility located in Kingston, Jamaica, founded by Clement "Coxsone" Dodd in the early 1960s. Studio One launched the careers of many of Jamaica's most renowned artists, including Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer.
  • Coxsone Dodd produced the album. The prominent Jamaican music producer and record label owner played a major role in the development of ska, rocksteady, and reggae music.
