  • This song turns the usual concept of death on its head. Instead of an ending, "dying" here is all about shedding an old identity so something renewed can take its place.

"'Dying In Reverse' is essentially about a fresh start or a rebirth of sorts," Cage The Elephant frontman Matt Shultz explained. "More in terms of death to ego, renewing the mind and heart. The journey of turning your perspective away from self in order to see more clearly through the lens of love and connect to deeper purpose."
  • Shultz sees the track as a snapshot of where Cage the Elephant stands in 2026. "'Dying In Reverse' is a good representation of the band's perspective as a whole, to not look so much at the past and, at the same time, not too far into the future," he told Billboard. "I think we'd all very much like to be in the present as much as possible, stay true to our convictions and to remain sincere in all of our creative pursuits."
  • The band crafted the song alongside producer brothers Justin and Jeremiah Raisen. Matt and guitarist Brad Shultz worked with the Raisen brothers from the initial demo stages, shaping it as a genuine four-way co-write.
  • Released as the second single from the band's seventh album, the track followed the rollout of "Beaches In Tennessee," which was also co-written and produced by the Raisen brothers.
  • Gamers will recognize the track from its inclusion on the EA Sports FC 27 soundtrack.

"Sonically we really wanted to capture this feeling of being suspended in time," Shultz told Billboard about the video game tie-in. "Almost as if life is being seen in between breaths."

He noted how that floating sensation mirrors high-stakes athletic moments. "There are moments that suddenly take on tremendous importance, both individually and communally, and I think sports can create that same feeling. The song pairs so naturally with sports because it's reaching for that same feeling of a shared experience becoming something larger."
  • Cage The Elephant named their 2027 UK and European tour the "Dying In Reverse Tour," giving the song title a life of its own on the road.
