Songfacts®:

  • "Hot S--t" finds Kanye West and Lil Durk joining Cardi B to rap braggadocios bars about their wealthy lifestyles and places in the rap game. The chorus features the Bronx rapper's signature bravado as she resolves to get rid of the competition, once and for all. Cardi described the song as a fun record, which is masculine and for the clubs.
  • Cardi originally recorded the song in 2019 - it dates back to before "WAP." Back then, it was a solo cut. "People always loved this record, but I always felt like it needed a male feature," she told Apple Music's Zane Lowe. "I did not know which male artist to put on this record because this has a certain type of beat that I feel like only certain artists could freak it."
  • In January 2022, West teased he'd finished a verse for Cardi. He recorded his rhymes at a hard time when he was making headlines for his public campaign against Pete Davidson, after the comedian started dating his former wife Kim Kardashian. West references his emotional travails and flexes his colossal wealth. "Kanye gave me this verse a couple of months ago when he was just all over the media, because of all of the things that were going on, and I like how his verse it's personal, but it's not that personal," Cardi told Lowe. "It's enjoyable in the clubs that you could be like, 'Yeah, yeah. You talk your big cash.' I really love it. And I'm so happy that he gave me this verse."
  • One feature became two when Lil Durk jumped on board at the suggestion of Cardi's record label. The rapper turned in his verse in just one day, adding a youthful energy to the recording. "I feel like Durk's verse is really street," Cardi told Lowe. "I see almost Bronx kids listening to his verse. And then when Kanye verse come in, you see people that are more into that money, into that grown s–t."
  • This is the first time Cardi B has worked with either Kanye West or Lil Durk. It marks the second time Chicagoans West and Lil Durk have collaborated, following the Donda track "Jonah."
  • Tay Keith came up with the bass-heavy trap production. The Memphis producer also created the beats for hits by Drake ("Nonstop" and "Jimmy Cooks"), Travis Scott ("Sicko Mode"), and Eminem ("Not Alike").
  • Bunny Wailer, an original member of Bob Marley's group The Wailers, gets a songwriting credit. This is because Cardi recycles a fragment of Marcia Griffiths 1983 reggae dance song "Electric Boogie" that he penned.

Still might slide on a opp. It's electric

After being revived by a Washington DJ seven years later, "Electric Boogie" generated the Electric Slide, a popular line dance at weddings and bar mitzvahs.
  • Cardi B released "Hot S--t" on July 1, 2022. She didn't do as much promo as usual because of issues within her team. "You know how I usually do the most with the promo? I just don't feel like doing too much this time around," she complained. "I'm just exhausted with everybody. I'm so tired of people not doing their f---ing jobs correctly. I'm so tired of people just doing things their way. I'm just over it."
