Songfacts®:

  • Released on June 20, 2025, "Outside" was Cardi B's first single since filing for divorce from rapper Offset the previous summer. The song is Cardi in full, unfiltered mode: bruised but unbroken, heartbroken but very much back in her stilettos. Summer's here and she is ready to be back outside.
  • Cardi doesn't name Offset directly... she doesn't have to. The lyrical shrapnel is unmistakable, aimed with precision at a man who, by her account, did her dirty.

    Good-for-nothing, low-down dirty dogs, I'm convinced
Next time you see your mama, tell her how she raised a b--ch

That's not just personal. That's generational shade.

But just as quickly as she buries the past, Cardi teases the present, specifically her new beau, NFL star Stefon Diggs.

Favorite player from your favorite team, he in my DM
I'm so small and tiny, he so big and tall
  • Cardi B told fans she wrote "Outside" during a moment of pure, red-hot rage.

"I made this song a few months ago when I was very, very angry," she said. "I had to change some bars because I was angry, honey."

She added it was the fan demand that persuaded her to release the track.
  • Producers Charlie Heat, HeyMicki, and DJ SwanQo built the track around the iconic "Triggerman" beat - a one-bar drum loop that originated in the 1986 Showboys track "Drag Rap." The beat, named after a line in the song, went on to become the backbone of New Orleans Bounce music, earning status for its memorable chopped rhythm and deep cultural roots. It has influenced mainstream hits by artists such as T.I. and Lil Wayne ("Ball") Drake ("Nice For What"), Chris Brown and Young Thug ("Go Crazy") and Beyoncé ("Church Girl").
  • Cardi debuted "Outside" at the Spotify Beach Party in Cannes on June 18, 2025.
  • Cardi B titled the album Am I the Drama? as a nod to her larger-than-life person. She told CBS Morning's Gayle King her family used to tell her she was "something else," destined to stand out.
  • Am I the Drama? debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200. It was the first chart-topping album with a title that poses a question since Billie Eilish's When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? reached the summit in April 2019. Other #1 albums with question-posing titles (some rhetoric) include Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass' What Now My Love, Olivia Newton-John's Have You Never Been Mellow, and The O Brother, Where Art Thou? film soundtrack.
  • Am I the Drama? was certified Platinum on its release day. This was possible because the RIAA applied the billions of existing streams from previously released Diamond and multi-Platinum hits like "WAP" and "Up" to the album's total the moment it dropped.
