Songfacts®:

  • "Hummingbird" is a melancholic country ballad with a bluegrass twist, led by a soaring fiddle melody. Carly Pearce sings about finding emotional clarity and seeking refuge when life throws curveballs.
  • Ooh, and the hummingbird flies on by 'cause it hates goodbye
    And so do I

The hummingbird is a tiny bird known for its quick, almost hovering flight. Here, the tiny, fast-moving winged creature becomes a metaphor for Pearce's own aversion to goodbyes. Just like the hummingbird seems to disappear in a flash, the singer wants to avoid endings and farewells altogether.
  • Nicolle Galyon, Shane McAnally, and Jordan Reynolds co-wrote "Hummingbird" with Pearce. The singer and McAnally also teamed up on production with John Osborne.
  • Pearce leans into her Kentucky roots with McAnally and John Osborne blending modern country with bluegrass influences, creating a hauntingly beautiful atmosphere. Jenee Fleenor's mournful fiddle and Josh Mathen's dobro intertwine with Pearce's signature twang, conveying her emotional journey.
  • "Hummingbird" is the title track of Carly Pearce's fourth studio album. She released it as a promotional single on March 1, 2024.

"When I wrote this song, I knew I wanted this to be the title of the album," said Pearce. "This song plays on my bluegrass roots but also lyrically tells the story of the journey I am on of finding love. This is the most unapologetically 'Carly' song I've ever written."
  • Hummingbirds are fascinating creatures! Here are some hummingbird fun facts from The Encyclopaedia of Trivia:

Their eggs are the size of peas, the smallest amongst all birds!

They're the only birds to fly backwards, hover, and even fly upside down!

Unlike most birds, the hummingbird can taste sweetness, perfect for their nectar diet.

With their long tongues, they can lick a whopping 13 times in a second!

These tiny birds need constant fuel and must eat immediately upon waking.

Though their daily calorie intake is just 3-7 calories a day, a human with similar metabolism would consume about 155,000 calories in a day.

In Aztec culture, the hummingbird was a symbol of strength and the empire itself.
