Songfacts®:

  • Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine (frequently shortened to Carter USM) were a British indie rock band formed in 1987 by singer James "Jim Bob" Morrison and guitarist Leslie "Fruitbat" Carter. This song about a fictional slum landlord was their second single and first UK Top 40 hit. The lyrics rail against the intimidatory tactics that slum landlords use against tenants, and includes a reference to infamous property tycoon Nicholas van Hoogstraten ("Now he's moving up onto second base... behind Nicholas Van Wotsisface"). Also the phrase a "born-again Rachman" refers to Peter Rachman, a corpulent and controversial landlord who made his money exploiting the Caribbean immigrant community in west London in the 1950s.
