Songfacts®:

  • Chris Stapleton first met Morgane Hayes in 2003 while working at neighboring publishing houses. Sparks flew, and they tied the knot on October 27, 2007. This song is a heartfelt ode where Stapleton professes his unwavering love and gratitude for his wife.
  • Over a blend of country, soul and blues, Stapleton pays homage to his woman, who makes him feel like a man. She's his comforter, healer, friend, encourager, and the one who keeps his feet on the ground.
  • Stapleton wrote "It Takes a Woman" with bluegrass songwriters and vocalists Ronnie Bowman and Jerry Salley. The same three also penned "Outlaw State Of Mind" from Stapleton's 2015 Traveller album.
  • Stapleton co-produced "It Takes A Woman" with Dave Cobb and Morgane. They went for a pared-down approach featuring Derek Mixon's soft, brushed drums and J.T, Cure's mellow bass lines. With this understated arrangement, Stapleton's unfiltered, blues-tinged, and soulful tenor takes the spotlight.
  • Chris Stapleton won the Best Country Solo Performance Grammy Award in 2025 for "It Takes a Woman." Higher was nominated for Best Country Album but lost to Beyoncé's Cowboy Carter.
