Songfacts®:

  • Coldplay debuted "We Dance" at the first-ever FIFA World Cup final halftime show, staged during the Spain vs. Argentina match at the New York New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on July 19, 2026. Joined by students from Staten Island's PS22 Chorus and The Muppets, frontman Chris Martin sang a unifying message about how all of humanity is connected by the cosmos:

    Brothers, sisters, who are we?
    Stars that make a galaxy.
I am you, and you are me,
    All of us are family
  • Martin wrote "We Dance" specifically for the event. In fact, he suggested the idea of a halftime show four years earlier to Australian humanitarian Hugh Evans, the CEO of Global Citizen. Evans, the show's producer, recalled their vision for connecting the worldwide audience in a 2026 USA Today interview:

"We know this is a fractured moment for our planet. And so we thought this is the moment to unite the whole planet behind the one thing that everyone agrees on, which is that children should have access to quality education."

Martin curated the list of performers, which included Madonna, Justin Bieber, Shakira, BTS, and Emmanuel Kelly. Coldplay's performance closed out the 11-minute production.
