• Dan + Shay have grown up a lot since they released their first single, the breezy love song "19 You + Me," back in 2014, but the country-pop duo occasionally have to remind themselves that they're still young and have a lot of living left to do. Their 2026 album, Young, is about making the most out of our fleeting existence - a concept inspired by its reflective title track.
  
  Written with the Nashville songwriting team the Love Junkies (Hillary Lindsey, Lori McKenna and Liz Rose) of Little Big Town's "Girl Crush" fame, "Young" examines the youthful tendency to take time for granted when you think you have all the time in the world. The older and wiser duo look back on the young men they once were and urge them to cherish their youth:

  Dan + Shay felt the song best represented the album as a whole. "I think about it as a letter to time," Shay Mooney told the Off The Record podcast of the album in 2026. "These are all the things that happen in this short little window we get here on earth. Because we have so little time, that's why it's special. If we had forever, everything would be meaningless. You could do it tomorrow and it's guaranteed."
• "Young" is also about not getting hung up on what-ifs and realizing that all of the duo's decisions, good and bad, led them to where they are today.
  
  "I think it's really important to celebrate the bad things that happened to you sometimes that got you to the good ones," Shay continued in the Off The Record interview. "And really looking back on our past as a whole of the butterfly effect. If that didn't happen, this doesn't happen. If that doesn't happen, this doesn't happen. Celebrating that and not taking things too seriously of one thing is not ever going to kind of derail everything. There's always hope for revival of this or whatever it is that you're searching for."
• Despite Shay's claims to the contrary, there are some things Dan Smyers would change about their shared past. He'd advise their younger selves to "put out 'Lipstick' instead of 'Road Trippin'." Both tunes are from their sophomore album, Obsessed (2017), and the latter was chosen by fans to be issued as a single. It ended up being a bad move - it was the duo's first single to miss the Top 40 on the Country chart.
• Dan + Shay typically open their albums with hard-hitting uptempo numbers, but they changed course with Young to set the tone for a more introspective set of songs, leading instead with the mellow acoustic arpeggio that introduces the title track.
• Dan + Shay almost had an entirely different album completed but scrapped it because they didn't think it was good enough. They were in the midst of a crisis over the rise of AI in the music industry, worried that they'd lose their jobs to music-making machines. Then they realized that authentic art, the kind that reaches the soul, is a human endeavor.
  
  "And we had kind of talked like, 'Man, the only way that we combat this is with real songs made by real humans, with real emotions,' Shay recalled. "There's a spirit to that, that when you write these songs that are truly about you and about stuff that you're going through right now, it touches us in a special way. And that's not nothing."
• The music video portrays Dan + Shay's lives unfolding in a classroom as growing versions of themselves get into childhood scrapes and wistfully dream of the future. By the end, the duo are elderly men looking back on the youth they wasted by being in a hurry to grow up. The 9-year-old version of Shay was portrayed by his eldest son, Asher James.
