Songfacts®:

  • This uplifting title track from Danielia Cotton's album "Good Day" was written during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. The song serves as a beacon of hope amidst dark times, aiming to lift spirits and provide a positive outlook.
  • Cotton co-wrote much of the album, including this song, with Jeff Cohen. Their goal was to create music that would be uplifting and put a smile on people's faces, even if only for a few minutes at a time. This is apparent in the chorus:

I'm gonna give you a reason to wake up believing
It's gonna be a good day
  • When Cotton got together with Jeff Cohen, it was to work on a musical she was working on, but they ended up writing this song together.

"His father had passed, and my other half has mantle cell lymphoma, which there's no cure for - so we had a lot of heaviness around us," Cotton told Songfacts. "We thought, why write a sad song? Who wants to turn on the radio to that? It seemed like during COVID, radio stations and people were saying, don't even send me a sad song.

And then it came... it's going to be a good day... It's going to be a good day. We're going to get out of here. We're going to be able to walk out on the streets again, and it's going to be okay."
  • The album was produced by Dave O'Donnell, who won the Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album Grammy for his work on James Taylor's 2020 album American Standard. Musicians on the track include Charlie Drayton (who has worked with the Rolling Stones), Matt Beck of Matchbox Twenty, and former Black Crowes bassist Andy Hess.
  • The music video was directed by Tatiana Fulmer and shot in Cotton's hometown of Hopewell, New Jersey.
