Songfacts®:

  • Darius Campbell Danesh's musical career began as an adolescent when he performed at Covent Garden Royal Opera House with the Scottish Opera in a production of Carmen. However, the Scottish teenager's ambitions lay with pop music, and in 2001 he was a high-profile failed auditionee on ITV's British talent competition Popstars. The following year, Darius came third in another ITV reality competition, Pop Idol.

Darius turned down Simon Cowell's lucrative record deal and signed instead with music titan Steve Lillywhite. "Colourblind" was the first single he released post-Pop Idol.
  • Darius had started working on "Colourblind" before he entered Pop Idol. Cowell wasn't interested in the song, but after meeting Lillywhite and songwriters Pete Glenister and Deni Lew, they developed it into his first single.
  • "Colourblind" is a love song with a motif related to the color spectrum. Darius feels "blue" when missing his girlfriend, "green" when his jealousy swells, and "red" when he gets angry as she's spending her time with her friends rather than him. but when Darius is with his beloved, he becomes "colourblind." She is the light of his life and her presence dispels the negative emotions (colors).
  • Released on July 29, 2002, "Colorblind" went straight to #1 on the UK singles chart, Mercury records' first chart-topper in 18 years. Lillywhite served as executive producer for Darius' debut album Dive In, which spawned another two Top 10 hits. His second album, Live Twice, flopped, but in 2005 Darius performed the role of Billy Flynn in the West End production of Chicago. His subsequent most-notable achievements were in musical theater.
  • On August 11, 2022, Danesh was found unresponsive in his apartment in Rochester, Minnesota, and pronounced dead later that day. He was just 41. After Darius' passing, "Colorblind" re-entered various charts, reaching the top spot on the iTunes download chart.
  • Shot over four days in Sierra Nevada, Spain, the video shows Darius playing his guitar on the mountains in his black suit. When he changes his outfit to jeans, it signifies he is leaving his Pop Idol image behind. The model Jacqui Ainsley plays Darius' love interest.
