Songfacts®:

  • Dolly Parton and Carl Dean's love story started in 1964 when they began dating. Two years later, on May 30, 1966, they married in Ringgold, Georgia, and set off on a life together that would span six decades. Carl, a Nashville asphalt-paving business owner, deliberately avoided the spotlight, preferring to support Dolly from behind the scenes. His aversion to public events was legendary - he rarely accompanied his wife to them. On March 3, 2025, Dolly shared the sad news with her fans: Carl had passed away aged 82 in Nashville.

In the wake of his passing, Dolly released this piano-based ballad four days later.
  • "If You Hadn't Been There" is a personal tribute to the man Dolly described as her rock and her source of confidence. "Carl and I fell in love when I was 18 and he was 23, and like all great love stories, they never end," Dolly wrote on social media. "They live in memory and in song, and I dedicate this to him."
  • Dolly and Carl's enduring relationship have inspired many of her songs. Here are a few notable examples:

    1968 "Just Because I'm a Woman":
The song explores a man's disillusionment when he discovers that his new wife is more complex than he first imagined. It was inspired by an argument they had after Dolly admitted to Carl she'd been with other men before they met.

1971 "The Last One To Touch Me":
This song is tied to Dolly's relationship with Carl. The lyrics, full of deep love and longing, have only grown more meaningful as the years have passed.

    1973 "Jolene":
While not directly about Carl, the song was inspired by a real-life encounter he had with a bank teller who seemed a bit too eager to catch his eye. Dolly created Jolene as a plea to a woman not to steal her man, though Carl's loyalty to Dolly was never in question.

2012 "From Here to the Moon and Back":
Another song that showcases Dolly's love for Carl, this is a heartfelt reflection on their relationship, with its timeless themes of devotion and affection.
  • The "If You Hadn't Been There" single cover has a sweet, nostalgic photo of the couple, with Dolly smiling as she wraps her arms around Carl's neck.
  • Kent Wells and Gregg Perry, who both have long histories with Dolly, produced "If you Hadn't Been There."

Wells, who has served as Dolly's musical director for over 25 years, has produced several of her albums, including Blue Smoke and Backwoods Barbie.

Perry first worked with Dolly Parton on her 1977 album New Harvest... First Gathering. He later produced her hit song "9 to 5."
  • Kent Wells plays the acoustic guitar on the song. The other musicians are

    Evan Hutchings: drums
    Jimmie Lee Sloas: bass
    Scotty Sanders: pedal steel guitar
    Justin Ostrander: electric guitar
    Jimmy Mattingly: fiddle
    Mike Rojas: keyboards
    Vicki Hampton: background vocals
    Jennifer O'Brien: background vocals
    Richard Dennison: background vocals
