Songfacts®:

  • This song introduces to the mainstream classically trained English vocalist Jorja Smith, who sings about getting it together with her lover. Drake joins her on the chorus. West Midlander Jorja Smith also appears on preceding track, "Jorja Interlude."

The teenage songstress first came to Drake's attention with her 2016 tune "Blue Lights," a song about police injustice that sampled rapper Dizzee Rascal. She supported him at his February 2017 Birmingham show, after which Drake made headlines by visiting Smith in her hometown of Walsall and accompanying her on a trip to the local shop for sweets.
  • Many suspect that the song alludes to Drake's rumoured fling with Jennifer Lopez. The Latino superstar was expected to feature on the track after the pair had teased fans about the collaboration in an Instagram video of the pair dancing together in December 2016, when a snippet of the tune could be heard in the background. However, it appears J.Lo's vocals were replaced by those of Jorja Smith.
  • Lopez isn't entirely absent from More Life. Drake raps about drunk texting her on "Free Smoke" and "Teenage Fever" samples her hit "If You Had My Love."
  • Wondering why South African house DJ Black Coffee is also credited as a featured artist? This is because his jazzy 2010 song "Superman" is the instrumental backdrop for the track.
  • Jorja Smith wasn't intimidated by working with Drake and even expressed reservations about contributing towards this tune. She recalled to Billboard magazine:

"I've always kind of been like nonchalant. I was very much so like, "Wow. He asked for me? That's really cool.' Then, he told me about the song. I write all of my music. That song was already written. It's a cover. The original is Black Coffee "Superman." That's his song featuring Bucie.

When I first heard it, I really liked it, but I was like, 'I don't know if I really want to do it,' because I haven't written it and it doesn't relate to me. Then, s--t happened in my life with boys and stuff and I was like this song is amazing and is actually what I'm going through. So I was like, 'Hey Drake, is there still a space for me?' And he said yes. So I recorded it in London and sent it over. He was like, 'Sick.'"
