Songfacts®:

  • "The Motion" finds Drake struggling to come to terms with the fact that a romance is truly over.

It's not me and you, it's not me it's you
You're reckless and you know it, they don't love you like I do
Say you're moving on, well, I guess that's just the motion

Drake is not only talking about romantic relationships, he's also musing on how superficial friends use him for personal gain before dropping him when they don't need him anymore.

    Then that phone doesn't ring
When they got everything, that's the motion
  • The song features grieving vocals from Sampha. The British soul singer-songwriter also sang on Drake's Nothing Was The Same track "Too Much."
  • Drake originally dropped "The Motion" on June 22, 2013, on the OVO blog alongside "Jodeci Freestyle" (featuring J. Cole), Patynextdoor's "Over Here," and his remix of Migos's "Versace." It was later included on the Best Buy deluxe version of Nothing Was the Same as a special Best Buy "exclusive" bonus track, and removed from Drake's SoundCloud.

"The Motion" was re-released in 2019 on all major streaming platforms as a part of Care Package, a collection of older Drake songs released to all music streaming platforms.
